There are many waterfalls in the greater Roanoke region that you can enjoy on a day trip. Whether you just want a quick jaunt to enjoy your lunch or you are up for a steep hike, there is a perfect waterfall adventure for you. Here are just a few of the beautiful waterfalls that you can find your way to on a short (less than 5 mile) hike. Access and parking fees are minimal and most are open year-round and during daylight hours, whether permitting. 

 

Roaring Run 

*accessible 1.5 mile hike

*easy for families

*features bridges, picnic spots, historic furnace to this 30 foot waterfall

*Jefferson National Forest in Botetourt County

*free

*sunset to sundown

 

Stiles Falls

*moderately challenging/about 3 miles round trip hike

*features creek crosses, rock scrambles en route to this 40 foot waterfall

*located in Shawsville at Alta Mons Methodist Camp

*leashed dogs permitted

*free

*open everyday with the exception of during camps and bad weather

 

Cascade Falls

*moderately challenging/about 4 miles round trip hike

*69 foot waterfall

*Giles County

*Parking Fee around $3 cash

*creekside hike with bridges and fire road

*leashed dogs permitted

 

Crabtree Falls

*strenuous with steep incline and rocky 2.5 mile loop trail

*60 foot waterfall

*campground and picnic area

*Blue Ridge Parkway/National Park Services-Nelson County

*highest vertical-drop cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River

*Well-behaved dogs are permitted off-leash on the trail. All other dogs should be leashed.

 

Dismal Falls

*easy

*12 foot waterfall

*free parking

*Bland County

*pet friendly
