Outdoor projects go a long way to adding protection from the elements and value to your home. Done right, they also add a lot in the way of curb appeal. Americans spent more than $326 billion on remodeling projects in 2015, but still, it's hard to know which improvements will appeal the most to buyers and add the most value when it's time to sell.

To get some guidance, the National Association of Realtors asked Realtors to rank home remodeling projects by appeal to buyers for the 2015 Remodeling Impact Report. I'm sharing the exterior projects that will get your home the most attention. And in every case, the exterior projects that Realtors say are most appealing to buyers are the ones that add the most value to your home.

Give these projects some consideration when deciding how to spend your home-improvement dollars, and check out the report for more ideas.

1. New roofing

A new roof is a great exterior upgrade, both in terms of curb appeal and value. Buyers will appreciate the care you've put into the home and the knowledge that they don't have to take on the job themselves.

2. New vinyl windows

Buyers love vinyl windows and the security and easy care that comes with them. Vinyl windows also provide good insulation and, therefore, savings in heating and cooling costs.

3. New garage door

A new garage door can make all the difference in a buyer's first impression of your home. Add even more appeal with home-automation technology that allows you to control the door from your smartphone or tablet.

4. New vinyl siding

Like vinyl windows, vinyl siding is an excellent choice if you're trying to make your home more energy efficient, which is a solid selling point with buyers. And you can't beat the low maintenance of vinyl siding.

5. New wood windows

Wood windows add a classic, custom touch to any home, and newer designs provide energy efficiency as well. Check the finish to get a sense of the work required to maintain them.
